Good afternoon. It's a lovely day today. The sunshine feels good๐
This time I'll introduce you about "seiza," Japanese traditional sitting posture: sitting on your heels. Have you ever experienced seiza?
Japanese people sit on their heels in many formal situations, especially in Washitsu or a Japanese-style room. Seiza has been an formal way of sitting since Edo period. Before that, Agura, crossed-leg sitting posture was formal. It is one of the reasons why seiza became formal in the Edo period that the Daimyo or feudal lords were required to sit in the seiza style when they gathered to meet the Shogun. In one theory, sitting seiza-style became formal to prevent rebellion by vassals... When you sit on your heels for a long time, your feet get numb and go to sleep. That's why!๐
I'll tell you one tip for keeping your feet from going to bed. Sit straight by putting your weight forward, to your knees, and cross your big toes. Try this when you sit in seiza-style next time๐
