Japanese Lacquer Day

Lacquered ”Sakazuki,” sake cup

Hello. Thank you for visiting me😃

I ate sushi at lunch. Mmm, it was yummy😋 It was served on a lacquered plate. Incidentally, today is the anniversary of that Japanese lacquer.

Over 1,000 years ago, in Heian period, Prince Koretaka, the first prince of Emperor Montoku, received instruction about the method of making lacquer and lacquer ware from a Buddhist saint called "Kokuzo Bosatsu." And the date was November 13, and Japan Lacquer Crafts Association established it for Japanese Lacquer Day.

By the way, have you heard that lacquer is also called "japan"? (The first letter of "japan" is not capitalized like the country's name "Japan.") It is said that Japanese lacquer ware was very popular in European countries, and they called it by the nickname "japan."
