”Hari-kuyo"

Pincushion

Hello. Thank you for visiting my blog😃

I'll introduce one of Japanese cultures.

It's December 8, which has some anniversaries, but the most traditional is "Koto-yoka." "Koto" literally means "things or events," to be precise, "farming." "Yoka" stands for the 8th. Japanese people used to finish farming of the year on December 8, and begin farming next February 8. These two events are collectively called "koto-yoka."

There are other events included "koto-yoka." One of them is "Hari-kuyo," the memorial event for useless sewing needles; "hari" means needles, and "kuyo" memorial service. People take their useless needles to a shrine or temple to stick them into "tofu" or "konnyaku," Devil's tongue. They thank them for their service, and pray for the improvement in their sewing skill as well.
