Hello. Christmas is now over, and the New Year is coming soon๐
Japanese people pay a first visit to a shrine or temple during the new year holidays; it's called "Hatsumoude."
One of the pleasures of "hatsumoude" is drawing "omikuji" or a paper fortune. It's something like trying one's luck. Most shrines or temples sell a fortune paper strip. Recently, you can get other types of "omikuji" in the shape of dolls or animals.
Fortune paper tells you your future and advice about business, study, marriage, travelling and so on. The "omikuji" results roughly range from "Daikichi" or great luck, "Kichi" or good luck, "Shokichi" or small luck, to "Kyo" or bad luck. The range or number of differences is depending on shrines and temples. After reading "omikuji," people tie it to a branch of a tree or the string the shrines or temples prepare. It's also OK to keep a lucky strip too.
You can draw a fortune paper anytime, not just during New Year holidays. Try your luck when you visit Japan!๐
