"Nankin" or squash and "yuzu"
Hello. How are you?
Today is the shortest day of the year; it's winter solstice, "Toji" in Japanese.
In Japan, there is a tradition for how to spend this day. Many Japanese people take a bath with "yuzu" fruit, which is believed to bring good luck. If we bathe with "yuzu," we won't catch a cold for a year. (We can prevent COVID-19 too?)
In addition, we have a custom of eating "kabocha" or "nankin" squash on the winter solstice. It originates from the old tradition that eating foods which have the sound "n" on this day leads to prevent disease and keep good health. Other than "nankin," there are some foods with "n" sound: for example, "ninjin" or carrot, "renkon" or lotus root, "udon" and so on.
Be careful not to catch a cold. See you next time๐
