"Tosenkyo," the fan tossing game
Japanese flag and the flag of Japan Modern Manners Association
Hello. Today, we, Japan Modern Manners Association held the New Year greeting party online just like last year. Almost 50 people joined the online party from all over Japan.
It started with "Toso" ceremony, and then award and certification ceremony. "Toso" or "Otoso" is spiced "sake" of the lucky charm which is enjoyed in celebration of the new year. It contains the extracts of spices like Japanese pepper, cinnamon and ginger. Japanese people drink "Toso" in the hope of expelling evil spirits and staying healthy.
There was also a presentation about "Tosenkyo," a fan tossing game, which started in Edo period in Japan. It's an indoor game of throwing "Sensu" (an open fan) at a target named "Cho" on the stand called "Makura." The shape which is formed by the combination of these three items is called "Mei," which is named after "Genji Monogatari" (the Tale of Genji) or ”Hyakunin-Isshu" (the traditional Japanese collection of one hundred poems.)
When the Coronavirus situation settles down, I wanna play "Tosenkyo" in person😃
